Part 1: Thread Types (The Big Two)
Explain that we choose thread based on the garment’s use, not just appearance.
- Polyester (The Workhorse)
- Properties: Strong, durable, and Bleach Resistant.
- Best Use: Uniforms, aprons, towels, and sports gear.
- Why: If a chef spills sauce on an apron and bleaches it, Polyester keeps its color. Rayon would turn white or dissolve.
- Rayon (The Beauty)
- Properties: High sheen (shiny), soft feel, and vibrant colors.
- The Downside: It is weaker than Polyester (breaks more often) and is NOT bleach resistant.
Best Use: High-end corporate polos or fashion items that won’t be industrially washed.
Part 2: The “Small Text” Fix
What happens when a client wants tiny letters (under 5mm tall)?
- The Standard: Normal embroidery thread is 40-Weight.
- The Problem: Standard thread looks “chunky” and illegible on small text.
- The Fix: Switch to 60-Weight Thread (Thinner).
- Crucial Step: When using 60-wt thread, you MUST tell production to switch to a Smaller Needle (Size 65/9). Using a big needle with thin thread leaves giant holes.
Part 3: The “Pantone” Warning
Clients often think thread works like printer ink. It doesn’t.
- The Reality: Pantone Ink has 2,000+ colors. Thread manufacturers (like Madeira) only make ~400 colors.
- The Protocol: We rarely promise an “Exact Match.” We promise the “Closest Available Match.”
- Action Item: Always warn the client of this limitation upfront to avoid complaints later.
